Jake Collegiate Scarf
Fingerweight yarn
Finished Dimensions roughly 9” x 75” unblocked.
I had some left over yarn so this was a full skein (100g) of the sand colorway and almost a full skein of the Impressionist colorway (blue). This pattern is very easy to adjust to the amount of yarn you have.
Note about using 2 colors… to keep the color transitions very well hidden in the work I give a little twist of the 2 color strands at the 2nd to last stitch on each row where the colors are held and on the 2nd stitch of the following row. This allowed me to travel the Sand color all the way up a long blue stripe without breaking color and also keeping it completely neat and hidden in the work. This way I only had a few ends to weave in at the end of the project, not a zillion ends for each color block.
My pattern:
Cast on with Color A 71 inches with longtail cast on method.
SOLID BLOCK (where you can add Monogram or Name later)
Knit for about 8 inches the following 2 rows:
Row 1 - K3, P1 to end of row
Row 2 - P3, K1 to end of row
FAT STRIPES
Introduce Stripes using same pattern as above, 10 rows of
Color B then 10 rows of Color A. Continue until you have 5 stripes in Color B and lastly a stripe of Color A of (10 rows).
LAZY CABLE
Continuing with Color A
Row 1 K3, P1, Slip 3 stitches to stitch holder and hold behind work, K3 from left needle, P1 from left needle, K3 from stitch holder; Repeat from until last 4 stitches; P1, K3
Row 2-12 follow the previous knit/purl pattern of K3, P1 on right side and P3, K1 on wrong side
Repeat Rows 1-12 until you have 8 twists. On last set knit through row 8 (not 12) to keep the section looking symetrical with the beginning of the section.
SKINNY STRIPES
Continue the stitch pattern but add 2 rows of Color B and alternate 2 rows of Color A and Color B for about 12”.
GROWING STRIPES
Increase 3 stripes of Color B stripes to 4 rows each
maintaining Color A in 2 row stripes.
Then 3 stripes of Color B in 6 row stripes.
Then 3 stripes of Color B in 8 row stripes.
Then 1 stripe of Color B for
10 rows
12 rows
16 rows
22 rows
30 rows
After the 30 row Color B stripe continue pattern 1 row in Color A. Cut a piece of Color A about 4 times the width of your scarf. Thread it thru a yarn needle and bind off with Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Sewn Bind-off Method (you can find videos of this method on YouTube) as follows:
Holding your knitting needle with tip pointing right, slip yarn needle with Color A into the first two stitches from right to left (as if to purl) keeping the stitches on the knitting needle. Pull yarn thru keeping a few inches extra dangling for weaving in at end. Slip yarn needle thru the first stitch on the needle left to right as if to knit, pull up slack and slip stitch off needle. You should still have 70 stitches left on your knitting needle.
Continue as above… Slip yarn needle into first two stitches right to left, pull up slack, then slip yarn needle into 1st stitch on knitting needle left to right, pull up slack and slip 1 stitch off knitting needle… until end of work. The last 1 stitch left on knitting needle slip the yarn needle thru stitch from right to left and slip stitch from knitting needle. Tighten gently.
Weave all ends carefully into your work with a yarn needle.
