The okapi is a mammal that is closely related to the giraffe. It lives in the Ituri Rainforest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa. This crocheted okapi is designed to look as similar as possible like its living model. It’s a male okapi called Jamaal. Jamaal is Swahili, the official language of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and means “the Beauty” and “elegant”. I think this is a name that meets the okapi’s gracefulness and elegance! The finished okapi measueres 20cm/8inch in width and heights.

Skill level: Intermediate due to much color changes
You should be familiar with crocheting in spirals, increasing, decreasing and changing color. You will use mostly common known stitch techniques. The trickier parts are described in the pattern instructions.

Materials: You’ll need yarn in white, brown and dark brown or black (don’t know how much, but take one ball in each color and you’ll have leftovers). Furthermore you’ll need stuffing and a pair of eyes (6mm in diameter).

Das Okapi ist ein Säugetier, das nah mit der Giraffe verwandt ist. Es lebt im Ituri Regenwald in der Demokratischen Republik Kongo in Zentralafrika. Dieses gehäkelte Okapi wurde so entworfen, dass es seinem lebenden Vorbild möglichst ähnlich sieht. Es ist ein männliches Okapi namens Jamaal. Jamaal ist Swahili, die Amtssprache der Demokratischen Republik Kongo, und bedeutet so viel wie „der Schöne“ und „elegant“. Ich denke, das ist ein Name der der Anmut und Eleganz des Okapis gerecht wird! Das fertige Okapi misst 20 cm in Länge und Höhe.

Schwierigkeitsgrad: Mittelschwer wegen häufigen Farbwechseln. Du solltest die generelle Technik zum Häkeln in Spiralen, Zu- und Abnahmen und den Farbwechsel beherrschen. Das Okapi wird hauptsächlich mit den üblichen Maschen gehäkelt. Die besonderen Techniken sind genau beschrieben.

Material: Du brauchst Garn in weiß, braun und dunkelbraun oder schwarz (ich weiß nicht, wie viel, aber wenn du ein Knäuel in jeder Farbe nimmst, hast du noch etwas übrig). Außerdem brauchst du Füllmaterial und ein Paar Augen (6mm Durchmesser).
