The idea of reimagining the Arts and Crafts Movement in our time was the inspiration behind this modern filet-crochet shawl. This rectangular shawl stays true to classic filet crochet, using void and filled spaces to create a pattern. The modern invention is all in the material: a wonderfully vibrant silk-blend yarn. Named after William Morris’s first daughter, Jane Alice, I like to imagine a modern young version of her wearing this shawl with jeans to the local flower market.

Finished size About 56” wide and 28” deep.

Yarn Manos Del Uruguay Silk Blend (70% extrafine merino wool, 30% silk): #SB3106 autumn, 7 hanks.

Hook Size I/9 (5.5 mm). Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.

Notions Yarn needle; 1” wood toggle buttons, 8.

Gauge 6 filet spaces = 4” and 10 rows = 4.25”.

Note Shawl body is worked first then edging and buttons are added.
