Janet's Tessellation Cowl
Today I’d like to introduce you to Janet’s Tessllation Cowl. This lovely two-tone tessellation cowl is lightweight and perfect for a fall day. Worked in the waistcoat stitch, this cowl mimics knit, and makes the colorwork crisp and neat. This cowl was a gift for my mother-in-law, Janet, so you can see how imaginative I was with the naming of this piece!
This cowl was a Christmas gift for my mother-in-law. She’s been asking for a blue and gray cowl for a while now, and I finally was inspired! Once I saw these colors in the shop, I knew they would make the perfect cowl, but it took me a while to hit upon the tessellation motif. One day I was just playing with diamonds and various colorwork (I still use Microsoft excel – it’s the easiest way I’ve found to figure out color charts!), and the idea of the tessellation just hit me! I hate to admit, it took a couple tries to actually make the tessellation work, but I’m so glad I persevered! You may have to be on the lookout for more tessellation works in the future! ;-)
This cowl is worked continuously, with no seaming. You start with the ribbing on one side, and go straight into the continuous waistcoat stitch colorwork. Because of this, you may want to use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round. On the other side of the cowl, the ribbing is worked directly onto it, so at the end you’ll have only 4 ends to weave in!
You can use any DK (#3) weight yarn. I used one of each Berroco Ultra Alpaca in color 62182 (B) and Berroco Ultra Alpaca Natural in color 62501 (G). I used 5.5 and 6mm hooks, and final measurements are 8” wide by 34” around. You should be familiar with the stitches Half double crochet, slip stitch, single crochet, and waistcoat stitch.
As always you are welcome to reach out if you have any questions about the pattern. Once the pattern is purchased, you may sell your finished items, as long as you give credit to me as the designer.
