January Swatchcap is a simple yet effective beanie pattern, pairing interesting, functional shaping with easy stitch patterns for a reversible, textured, lightweight hat.

The term “Swatchcap” isn’t original to me. From quick research, the most likely original source seems to be Elizabeth Zimmermann, and even if hers was not absolutely the first use, Zimmermann’s writings are almost certainly the reason why the term is floating around in my head. But while her swatchcaps were functional swatches for colorwork or other complicated techniques in larger projects (sweaters), this one is almost the opposite: I wanted a swatch in stockinette and garter stitch so I could double check a standardized gauge for the more textured North Side Hat.

Despite the simplicity of the stitches and the dull origin story (oh man, if your purpose is to be a swatch…), the January Swatchcap features some tweaks to make it functionally reversible (it looks nice on either side, though different), makes a good introduction to some more interesting yet still approachable techniques used in other Mouse Army patterns, and results in a pretty decent beanie.

To get a hat that fits average adults, gauge is 22 sts and 40 rows in blocked garter stitch. It may go without saying here, but as always: please check your gauge.

-about 130 yards of Cascade Yarns Longwood Sport
-16” circular needle in US3-4/3.25-3.5mm, or size needed for gauge
-DPNs in size needed for gauge
-Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
