This is a simple cable and rib hat pattern made for very small babies.
The smallest size will fit a 1 to 3 pound baby. The middle size will fit a 3 to 5 pound baby. The largest size will fit most newborns.

I have been using scrap acrylic yarn to make them. They can be made for donation to hospital NICU wards or for loved ones who came or are expected to come early.

Yarn suggestions: Acrylic or Cotton.
Hospitals have requirements on yarn fibers that can be used in donated items. The items must be washable at high temperatures. The yarn must be soft, but not fluffy. Fiber fluff can get sucked into medical equipment and possibly cause malfunction. Fluff can also be inhaled by a baby and cause increased breathing problems for little one who is already having breathing difficulty.
