Inspired by my parents’ new home beneath the Tetons, Jenny Lake is a luxuriously cabled hat that makes the most of the lofty, wooly bloom of a heavy single-ply yarn. The cables are simple enough to knit without a cable needle, making for an intriguing texture that knits up in record time. Jenny Lake works up in your choice of two strands of a light worsted held double, or one strand of a chunkier yarn. I couldn’t pick between these two samples; I love the cozy softness of two strands of Knit Picks’ Preciosa just as much as the earthy, sheepy charm of (Wyoming’s own!) Quarry from Brooklyn Tweed.

Size: fits 22” / 56 cm head; finished size 19” / 48 cm circumference x 7.75” / 19 cm tall (unstretched)

Yarn: Knit Picks’ Preciosa (100% Merino wool, 273 yards / 249 meters per 100 grams), held double, 1 skein, or Brooklyn Tweed Quarry (100% Wyo- ming-grown Targhee-Columbia wool, 200 yards / 182 meters per 100 grams), held single, 1 skein. Samples shown in “Bare” and “Moonstone.”
If substituting, choose a light worsted or DK for the dou- ble-stranded version, and a “chunky” for the single. Note that you may need more than one skein in an alternate yarn.

Needles: 16” / 40 cm circular needle or DPNs, sizes US 6 / 4.00 mm and US 9 / 5.5 mm, or sizes re- quired to obtain gauge. A long circular needle may be used for magic loop.

Notions: Tapestry needle, cable needle (if desired), stitch markers (if desired).

Gauge: 21 stitches and 26 rows per 4” / 10 cm, in matched twists stitch pattern on larger needles, after blocking. Two repeats of the 9-stitch-wide chart should be approximately 3.25” / 9 cm wide.
