“The Jewel Stripe Shawl, with its blocks of stripes, is great fun to knit. You establish the first rows of your blocks of stripes across the row and then knit away until it is time to make decisions about the next lot of colours. I varied the scale of the blocks to keep the design rich and unexpected and worked in the occasional change of tone within each block.
My colours were directly inspired by the intense, glowing glazes of nineteenth and twentieth-century pottery at the V&A (Museum). If you want to attempt these colours, be sure to keep them dark and rich. The important thing is not to dilute the mysterious depth of tone by a shocking light colour - one of the commonest mistakes in design.”
