Jiffy Jumper
The Jiffy Jumper is a really lovely, quick children’s knit that works up in, well, a jiffy! It’s such a satisfying project and while it has a bit of the look of all your fave charity shop baby knits, it’s a little better fitted and updated for the modern knitter! It is made for babies and children from 3 months to 10 years with stranded colourwork instructions and instructions to add optional duplicate embroidery designs if desired!
This pattern is a fundraiser for maternity pay for my support worker! Up to the first £2000 all profit from sales will go directly to Rose, after which I will be splitting the profit between us! That’s why we have not added any discounts on this pattern x
The jumper is worked in the round, with very straightforward stranded colourwork. Front and back pieces are then worked flat before joining at the shoulders with a three needle bind-off. The neckband for babies includes instructions to make a small button tab for ease of dressing, while for kids it is a seamless neckband in the round. Set-in sleeves are picked up seamlessly from the armhole and worked flat before sewing up the underarm seam with mattress stitch.
Choosing a Size:
Choose the size that most closely matches your child’s measurement at their widest point- this could be the belly or chest. Sizes 3m (6m, 12m, 18m, 2y) (4y, 6y, 8y, 10y) will fit widest body circumference of 46 (48, 52, 54, 55) (57, 61, 66, 72) cm / 18 (19, 20.5, 21.25, 21.75) (22.5, 24, 26, 28.25) in.
This is a positive ease garment.
Finished Chest Circumference: 64 (66, 70, 72, 74) (78, 82, 88, 94) cm / 25.5 (26.5, 28, 28.75, 29.5) (31.25, 32.75, 35.25, 37.5) in
Intended positive ease at chest: 18 (18, 18, 18, 18) (20, 20, 22, 22) cm / 7 (7, 7, 7, 7) (7.75, 7.75, 8.75, 8.75) in
Schematic illustration with complete measurements appears in pattern photos. There are simple tips through the pattern on how to lengthen the sleeves and body if required.
Size 2-4 years is shown throughout on my friends’ kids who are both nearly 4 and could probably do with the size up!
Yarn:
I would recommend using a yarn that you or the recepient of the gift will feel able to wash. For both of my examples, I used superwash merino yarns, but an acrylic yarn would work as well. The brown sample is made from a mix of yarns, I will provide specific yardage for my yellow sample.
The Fibre Fox Merino Luxe DK (100% 19.5 micron superwash merino 225m / 246yds in 100g) in colours Honey (C1), Red (C2), and Hoar Frost (C3)
Gauge:
20 sts and 30 rows/rounds per 10cm / 4in in stockinette stitch worked both flat and in the round using 3.5mm / US 4 needle.
I suggest knitting one flat gauge swatch at least 6in / 15cm square in your Main Needle before knitting to check gauge. If there are more sts and/or rows than recommended in the gauge, you should size up your needles. If there are fewer sts/rows, you should size down.
Supplies Needed:
- Tapestry needle
- 2 distinct stitch markers (can be made from a loop of waste yarn)
- Blocking mat and pins
- 1-3 buttons for sizes 3m (6m, 12m, 18m, 2y) (-, -, -, -) only
Needles:
-
Main Needle - 3.5mm / US 4 or size needed to obtain gauge in your preferred lengths for large stitch counts (I used 32in / 80cm.)
-
Ribbing Needle - 3mm / US 2 or 0.5mm smaller than your Main Needle in your preferred lengths for small circumferences (I used 10in / 25cm.)
Yardage:
You can use the tables in the pattern photos to help you determine how much overall yardage you require in each colour. Be aware that metres are shown above and yards below.
