Jillia Neckwarmer
This thick, squishy neckwarmer was created for a LYS class on Beginning Cables. It is an easy and enjoyable and introduction to cabling, as well as a quick knit for a more experienced knitter!
Knit in one skein of soft, chunky-weight yarn, three plump cables travel up a garter stitch background. The first stitch of each row is slipped for a clean finish to the edges, and the cast-on tail is later crocheted into a loop to fasten around a large decorative button.
Pattern instructions are in both fully charted and written forms.
Recommended Yarns:
Look for a chunky weight yarn in a solid or tonal shade that falls in the “130 yds to 100 grams” ballpark.
Malabrigo Yarns Mecha (130 yds/ 100g - shown in #809 Solis) makes a beautiful FO.
Berroco Vintage Chunky (130 yds/100g - shown in #2197 Neptune) is a nice, affordable choice for a beginner.
I haven’t made a sample in this choice, but Rowan Cocoon (126 yds/ 100 g) falls in the same parameters.
Sizing:
My neckwarmer in Mecha measured 4.75” (across the center) x 24” before blocking, and 5.25” x 28 when pinned out wet.
My neckwarmer in Vintage Chunky measured 5” (across the center) x 25” before blocking, and 5.75” x 28” when pinned out wet.
Gauge:
This pattern is not fully dependent on gauge, as long as you are happy with your fabric and the finished piece can be blocked to a size that you like. The intent is to use almost the entire skein of yarn.
PLEASE NOTE: I knit very tightly. I actually used a US 9 (5.5 mm) needle to achieve this gauge, but knitters who are typically “on gauge” will likely wish to use a US 8 (5.00 mm) needle. Very loose knitters will likely wish to use a US 7 (4.5 mm) needle. Changes in gauge will affect finished size and amount of yarn used.
Needles:
Size US 8 (5.5mm) needles (straight or circular)
Other Materials:
Size G (4.0mm) crochet hook, tapestry needle, sewing needle and thread, 1.5” washable button (shown is La Mode #27008)
