John Barleycorn is the title of a British folk song, whose main character is the personification of the barley, and of the main alcoholic beverages made from it, beer and whisky.

It’s a meaningful song, and I decided to name the shawlette after its character both because of the stitch and the colour I used. The stitch reminds barley’s grains, and the rich dark yellow made me think of ripe barley fields – and of blonde beer, of course.

The shawlette is a rather wide triangle worked from tip to tip, with a series of increases and decreases to give it shape.

The pattern is rated easy according to Craft Yarn Council’s standards; if you’re a beginner wanting to learn something about increasing and decreasing, it’s the pattern you’re looking for!

The finished item is 165 cm long x 47 cm wide at its largest part (after blocking), but it can be easily adjusted to your taste, either you want it bigger or smaller.

With given gauge, you’ll get a rather compact fabric; if you wish to get a lighter shawlette, just use a bigger hook.

John Barleycorn è il titolo di una canzone folk britannica che ha per protagonista la personificazione dell’orzo, e delle principali bevande alcoliche derivate dal cereale, la birra e il whisky.

Si tratta di una canzone ricca di significati, e ho deciso di dare lo stesso nome al mio scialletto sia per il punto che per il colore. Il punto, infatti, ricorda i chicchi d’orzo, e il giallo ricco del filato fa pensare ai campi d’orzo maturo - ed alla birra bionda, naturalmente.

Lo scialle è lavorato da punta a punta con una serie di aumenti e diminuzioni a dargli forma.

Il modello è valutato easy secondo gli standard del Craft Yarn Council; se siete agli inizi e volete imparare qualcosina su aumenti e diminuzioni, è il modello che fa per voi!

Il capo terminato misura 165 cm di lunghezza x 47 cm di ampiezza nella parte centrale (dopo la messa in forma), ma grazie alla sua costruzione le dimensioni si possono facilmente adattare alle proprie esigenze.

Con la tensione indicata si ottiene un tessuto piuttosto compatto; se si preferisce uno scialletto più leggero, basta provare ad usare un uncinetto più grande.
