Join the Dots Cowl
Here is a link to the gorgeous mug, which a lot of folk have asked about :-)
Dotty Sheep Straight-sided Mug
Update May 2020 - Please download version 1.2 May 2020, which includes some fixes to minor mistakes in the Abbreviations and Symbols section of the pattern.
About this design
A recent addition to my mug collection (see cover photo) is what inspired the colour scheme for this crochet cowl. And imagine my delight when I discovered that the deliciously soft and smooshy Patons Baby Dreamtime Merino 4 ply came in exactly the right colours!
The techniques used in the design are very simple – it just uses the basic crochet stitches worked in the round. The use of three contrasting colours gives you six different colour combinations for the motifs, and when they are all joined together there is a delightful balance and harmony.
However, I think this cowl would also look spectacular in a riot of colours, and this would be a great way to use up scraps as well ☺.
Wear it in a big floppy loop, or wind it around your neck two times. Either way you’ll be feeling warm and fabulous!
Size
Finished dimensions – 8 in/20.32 cm wide and 56 in/142 cm in circumference after blocking. However, you can lengthen or shorten the cowl if you wish, noting that you will require more yarn if you opt to make your cowl larger.
Tension
A single square motif measures 1 ¼ in/ 3.2 cm wide using a 3.00 mm crochet hook. A close match for tension is moderately important for this pattern in order to ensure you get the correct finished dimensions, as well as a nice drape in the fabric of the cowl.
Yarn
You will need 2 x 50g (approx. 165 m/180 yds per 50g) of 4 ply/fingering weight yarn in three different colours that crochet to match the required tension gauge. The sample Join the Dots Cowl has been crocheted with Patons Baby Dreamtime Merino 4 ply in the following colours:
Colour A Moccasin (Col 4898)
Colour B Gold Amber (Col 3912)
Colour C Cream (Col 0051)
You will have a wee bit of yarn left over at the end but not much (see the first photo for my leftovers).
Hooks
3.00 mm crochet hook.
Notions
Tapestry/darning needle.
