joni
~ joni ~ is a 70s-inspired poncho-pullover; light, flowing and comfortable, with graduated, asymmetric stripes on loose-fitting kimono sleeves, a slash neckline and a high-hip-hugging ribbed waistband. This totally reversible pullover is knitted in an airy cotton/merino blend yarn, perfect for those cooler summer days.
~ Construction ~
joni is knitted sideways in stocking stitch, starting from one side with a provisional cast-on at shoulder level, across the body (incorporating a slash neck), then to the first striped sleeve knitted in the round. The provisionally-held stitches are returned to for the second striped sleeve, again knitted in the round. Stitches are picked up at high hip level for a ribbed band.
The pullover can be worn with either the stocking stitch (knit) or the reverse stocking stitch (purl) as the right side, and the front and back are also reversible.
~ Sizing ~
The pullover has 2 measurements to take into account: firstly, measure from the highest point of your shoulder to your high hip level and choose your pullover depth size from 18/19/20/21/22/23” (46/48/51/53/56/58cm); then take your high hip measurement and choose from 32/34/36/38/40/42/44” (81/86/91/97/102/107/112cm).
The pullover is designed to fit snugly at hip level, so choose the sizings which most closely match your measurements. The sample pullover shown is knitted in reverse st st, size 21” (53cm) depth, 36” (91cm) high hip.
~ Yardage ~
Estimated yardage of Mabel & Ivy Coast: 2/3 balls in Ecru (MC: main colour), 1 ball in Fairy (CC1), 1 ball in Freesia (CC2) and 1 ball in Aconite (CC3).
NB: exact yardage is difficult to assess as, for example, a tall pullover height may be incorporated with a smaller hip size. As a guide, the sample shown (21” 53cm depth, 36” 91cm high hip) required 2.2 balls in MC and half a ball each in 3 contrast colours; a shorter depth and smaller high hip will require 2 balls in MC (and less than a ball each in 3 contrast colours). Larger sizes may require an additional ball of MC: please ensure you have sufficient yarn to complete your pullover.
