Jopling Scarf
Meet the Jopling Scarf!
The original pattern for this was included in Weldon’s Practical Knitter, No. 1 Vol. 1 from 1886! The Jopling Scarf comes from Number 36 & 37 in Practical Knitter, originally titled “Knitted Shawl in Open Diamond Pattern,” and “Border for Open Diamond Pattern Shawl,” respectively.
The main portion of the Jopling scarf uses the exact pattern from Number 36, only rewritten using modern abbreviations and with a stitch count for a scarf-sized width instead of a square shawl. The Jopling Scarf also includes a chart for both the scarf and border pattern!
Whereas the original pattern instructs you to knit the border then seam it on, the Jopling Scarf opts for the two-birds-one-stone method of simultaneously applying the border to the live scarf stitches. This means no seaming, yay!
The scarf gets its name (and styling) from the incredible Victorian era painter Louise Jopling, and there is a mini-bio on Louise Jopling at the end of the scarf pattern. I’d also encourage you to do some googling on her yourself, even if only to stare at some of the incredible portraits she painted over her lifetime.
This pattern is available exclusively on Squid’s School of Vintage Knitting, where there are dozens of vintage and historical knitting patterns at your fingertips!
