Jorunn features an inverted flower basket motif with nupp embellishments at the very end.

The pattern has been test-knitted. It assumes that you can read charts, cast on provisionally, and have some experience knitting lace. A link is provided for 2 techniques to work nupps. A photo tutorial is included with instructions on how to attach the edging.

The shawl’s main pattern is modular and therefore it can be easily resized. Instructions to do so are given in the pattern.

Jorunn is part of my series Along the Whale Road, which highlights yarns from places visited & settled by the Vikings. The sample scarf used yarn from the island of Öland in Sweden.

The “whale road” is a Norse kenning for the sea.

In Dröstorp nature reserve on Öland, there is a runestone that reads “Jorund raised this stone after her brother.” This name and its variations are still used in Scandinavia today; it is pronounced something like “YOO-rune.”
