This textured cowl is based on a couple of scraps of linen weave found in an archaeological dig in York (UK). The weave has an interesting pattern that I thought would translate well to knitting. Once knitted up it looks like a twill with seemingly random vertical stripes.

You’ll need two colors of yarn and circular or double-pointed needles. Start with an easy provisional cast on, use knit and purl stitches exclusively, and bind off either with Kitchener or a 3-needle bind-off.

The cowl has double layers and is warm and cozy. My sample is meant to fit closely but not too snugly to the neck. You can make the cowl bigger by adding more repeats.

Although I used worsted yarn, you can use any yarn and needles you like. Just be sure to knit a swatch, count your stitches and figure out how many repeats you need to reach the size you want in circumference or height.
