Joyful January is a smart hybrid hat that is fitted enough for the beanie lover and has a little slouch in the back for the beret lover. It is a quick knit requiring less than a 200 yards of worsted weight yarn. This design is great for featuring that special embellishment you’ve been looking to add to your hats, such as a vintage button or brooch, or a crocheted lace flower. Shown here, the fancy fan on the band is accented with a glass flower button by BC glass artist, Nicole Valentine.

The pattern is easy to intermediate with detailed instructions. It is knit in one piece, with nearly no finishing! Starting from the fan, the band is knit flat and joined to form a loop. Body of the hat is picked up along the row edge of the band and worked in the round to the crown. The center of the crown is accented with an optional i-cord button, adding a special finishing detail.

Knitting this hat will bring you joy and wearing it will keep your ears warm!

Size: One size, hat circumference is approx. 20 inches, stretchable. Band is 2.5 inches wide.

Skill Level: Easy to Intermediate, a good project for knitters who’ve never picked up stitches along a row edge because you will knit into every stitch (No calculations!). Contains a 3-needle bind off technique that can be avoided by sewing if desired.

Materials:
One hank of Cascade 220 or a worsted medium weight yarn of your choice.
16’ circular needle, US 7 (4.5 mm)
set of DPNs, US 7 (4.5 mm)
(Of course, all you magic loopers out there can just go with one long US 7 (4.5 mm) circular!)
