Named after a quote from Spike of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: “I get it. The joke’s on me. Lots of laughs. Yeah. Hey, bring the wife and kiddies. Come see the show. ‘Cause it’s gonna be a circus. This… just the beginning, love. A warm-up act. The real headliner’s coming, and when that band hits the stage, all of this… (he gestures all around him) All this… will come tumbling in death and screaming, horror and bloodshed. From beneath you, it devours.”
The pattern represents an awareness ribbon for all women affected by violence. Proceeds from the sales of this pattern will be donated to Take Back the Night of WIll County, Illinois until Oct 4th, 2014. Take Back the Night brings survivors, supporters, activists and community leaders together in a call for the end of violence against women. It creates a greater awareness of violence in your local community, and in other communities across the world, while educating the public about the attitudes and behavior that perpetuate this problem.
Take Back the Night first appeared in Europe in 1976 in response to a series of sexual assaults and murders against women. Five years later, the first event was held in the United States and has continued throughout the world as a sign of empowerment for women, men and children. This event offers the opportunity for survivors of abuse to join with others of all races, cultures, background and experience to combine the strength of their voices to declare an end to violence.
Since 1996, the Will County Take Back the Night has hosted an annual rally to raise awareness for sexual violence and to support survivors in their healing process. Take Back the Night is critical to Will County’s overall commitment to raising awareness about violence against women and the tragedies it creates. Each year, the event includes a featured speaker, entertainment, a brief march, and an information table with materials from organizations involved in helping victims of violence.
Will County Take Back the Night also raises funds for local agencies which assist women and their families. In 2010, donations helped provide $8,000 of assistance to nonprofit agencies that work directly with women and children whose lives were affected by violence.
