Just You - Sweater
Just You – Sweater is freely inspired by the 90’s TV series Twin Peaks created by David Lynch and Mark Frost. The pattern is a tribute to the character Donna Hayward (Lara Flynn Boyle), who wore the original sweater, and to the song Just You sung by the character James Hurley (James Marshall) and written by the amazing Angelo Badalamenti, which was played in episode 2 of season 2 in an iconic scene where James, Donna, and Maddy Ferguson (Sheryl Lee) is sitting in Donna’s living room, working on James’ new song. While James sings with his crazy falsetto voice, he first looks Donna deep into her eyes, but then begins to turn his gaze over to Maddy, which Donna does not like. This scene and song are much debated, as everything about the situation is over-the-top in the best Twin Peaks-y way possible. If you don’t know the song, it’s always worth it to listen too!!
In my interpretation of Donna’s orange cable sweater, the sweater is knitted from the top down. First, a double-bent ribbed neck edge is knitted and then shoulder increases are knitted at the same time as short rows to form the neckline. Hereafter, the front and back piece are knitted separately, where vertical grooves of purl stitches are knitted at the back piece, while on the front piece a beautiful cable pattern is knitted, which inevitably resembles the original pattern. Below the armholes, the work is assembled, and the rest of the body is knitted in the round on circular needles, still with grooves on the back and cable pattern on the front. The sleeves are knitted by collecting stitches along each armhole, which are knitted in the round, while also knitting grooves lengthwise. The Just You Sweater has a positive ease of about 25 cm / 10 inches compared to your bust size. If you want a sweater that fits tighter or looser, you can choose to go down or up a size compared to your normal size, but still knit the length in your regular size.
