Justice
“I made a new quilt from scratch,” the enslaved woman, Hetty, recalls, “red squares and black triangles, me and mauma’s favorite, the blackbirds flying away.” These lines in Sue Monk Kidd’s historical novel The Invention of Wings, inspired Justice, along with Liberty, in Stories in Stitches 6, two sister projects celebrating the lives of abolitionists and women’s rights activists, Sarah and Angelina Grimke.
I use the gradient yarn in Justice to convey that we must protect liberty and justice by participating in our government, or these values will fade from our society.
Using techniques adapted from Tunisian entrelac crochet, each of the 5 triangular motifs is made from 3 mini-skeins from a Fiber Optic Yarns Paintbox, and bordered with black triangles from a separate skein. Each motif starts with a single square and increases in size with additional squares added in diagonal rows. A diagram illustrates how each motif is made, and detailed photographs show how to make the stitches.
