This geometric design allows you to experiment with colors! Choose three colors with lots of contrast for the maximum effect (light-medium-dark). Only two colors are used at a time so the mittens are also suitable for those who are only beginning to learn stranded knitting. Kaarna mittens are knitted from the cuff up with an afterthought thumb. They fit the medium women’s hand but you can easily adjust the size of your mittens.

Kaarna is a Finnish word meaning the bark of a tree, especially that of an old pine tree.

Yarn:
Fingering weight yarn such as Holst garn Supersoft (100% wool, 287m/50g) in three colors:
MC 150 meters (165 yards)
CC1 90 meters (100 yards)
CC2 30 meters (35 yards)

Brown sample knitted with Charcoal (MC), Gold crest (CC1) and Oatmeal (CC2)
Green sample knitted with Fenland (MC), Dark olive (CC1) and Scarab (CC2)

Note: If you are using Holst garn supersoft you need less than half a skein of each color, so this is a perfect project to use the leftovers in your stash!

Needles:
For the ribbing: 2.0mm (US #0)
For the main fabric: 2.5mm (US #1 ½)
Note: you can either use DPNs or a 60 cm (24”) circular needle if you prefer knitting with the Magic Loop method

Gauge:
38 sts and 38 rows = 10 cm (4”) with the bigger needles

Size:
To fit average women’s hands, size adjustable. Length from top to cuff: 24 cm (9.5”), circumference 20 cm (8”)
