Kaayur is a light, ethereal shawl made using the filet crochet technique. This triangular shawl has pine tree motifs all over and is decorated on the sides with delicate picot edging. The lacy edging looks like the shawl is embellished with beads or as if the pine trees are dotted with snowflakes.

This elegant shawl pattern comes with a step-by-step picture tutorial, 3 charts, schematics and a detailed explanation of all steps included in the pattern.

Kaayur or Yaari- Kul is the name given to the Himalayan Blue Pine( Pinus wallichiana) by the locals of Kashmir, India. Kaayur/ Kaeur is pronounced as Kae-yoor in the Kashmiri language.*

There is a popular Kashmiri saying, “Kaashur yaar guv kaayur naar “ or “The burning charcoal of the kaayur timber is a friend of the Kashmiri”. Another Kashmiri saying, “Vunn tchein yaarein daai sundh sugg” or “The jungle pines are irrigated by God only” makes this tree closer to Kashmiri life.

I chose this graceful name as the entire shawl is filled with a pine trees design. It looks as if this delicate shawl is a beautiful pine tree forest or as if one is embracing Christmas trees. You can tell that hugging trees is an old time hobby of mine along with reading about different cultures.

Here is another beautiful lesson I learned from Pine trees:
Pine trees are strong and stubborn – and fight for survival in any location they are placed, as they are highly adaptable. In fact, during strong winds, they often bend to avoid breaking. While some may not believe that trees have intelligence, the pine tree is one that is a survivalist, using its own instincts to ensure its future is long.
