Kalamalka Lake (or Kal Lake) is a glacial lake located in the southern interior of BC. It is one of only a handful of ‘marl lakes’ that display the colourful reaction of limestone deposits to temperature change. In summer, dissolved limestone crystallizes, giving the lake its breathtaking blue and green colour.
Kalamalka is knit tip-to-edge in squishy garter stitch. Thin stripes of ruching throughout represent the rippling waves of Kal Lake. It is designed to use either two or three colours of your favourite fingering weight yarn.
Needle size / gauge determine finished size.
Dimensions
small - approx. 70” across and 18” at deepest point
large - approx. 95” across and 24” at deepest point
Needles
3.5mm - 4mm, or size needed to obtain gauge
Gauge
Gauge is not critical for this project but will affect yardage requirements. The small sized shawl is knit with a gauge of 21st / 4” and the large shawl is knit with a gauge of 19st / 4”. The large sized shawl used all but 1.5g of colour A, so any larger gauge will require more than one skein of yarn.
