Kalamalka
This cowl is just the thing for that special yarn or gradient set that you’ve been saving to show off a sequence of colors. The main body has an interesting texture that is created using only two pattern rows, and that allows the knitter to either blend a set of graduated colors more smoothly, or that emphasizes the color-changing boundary in an interesting way when contrasting colors are used. These particular colors remind me of the deep waters of Lake Kalamalka in a hot summer with the warm top 3 feet, and the nice chilly layers below.
The size of the finished cowl is 60” in diameter by 18” (after blocking), and it can be wrapped twice around your neck, or over your head once and around your neck, showing off the attractive “wrong” side as well.
Yarn: Frabjulous Fibers, Mad Hatter (2) mini skein packs (430 yds each = 860 yds total), or any fingering/sock weight yarn totaling 860 yards (10 colors used in photos - 86 yards each)
Needles: Circular needle, US9/5.5mm, 20” – 29”
Notions: Tapestry needle
Stitch marker
Gauge: 5-½ stitches/inch (pre-blocking)
Size pre-blocking: about 44” diameter x 12”
Size post-blocking: 60” diameter x 18”
The gauge produces a fairly open and light fabric that drapes well, and allows wet blocking to the larger size easily. It seems more dense visually because of the nature of the linen stitch.
Techniques: knit, knit through back loop, slip stitch, cable cast on, knitted cast off, yarn forward (in linen stitch)
