KalaPeaLuu Cowl incorporates a pop of natural color to elevate a traditional stranded-colorwork cowl to new levels of chic style. It will be an excellent addition to any woman or man’s wardrobe, with its eye-catching look. The resulting cowl is fun to knit and so easy to wear. I love to thrown mine on with trousers, dresses or with my favorite coat.

The design features our traditional old mitten pattern of Pühalepa „fishheadbone“ from the Island of Hiiumaa. It is a small, fairytale like quiet Estonian island, where time stands still. It is a place where you can enjoy a sauna, a jog along the beach with highland cattle, or just standing thoughtfully in a totally calm field.

The name „KalaPeaLuu“ comes from the Estonian Word of „fishheadbone“ and this cowl again celebrates the shared heritage between the knitting tradition of today and our history. The pattern belongs to my My Roots Series; a pattern series with the theme of our Estonian knitting folklore. Estonia remains in the spotlight for indigenous knitting.

CONSTRUCTION:
KalaPeaLuu Cowl is a short tubular cowl, started with a provisional cast-on using waste yarn, knitted in the round and seamed with kitchener stitch grafting at the end. Before grafting just turn the end 180 degrees to get a little twisted mobius cowl. This seamless finishing allows you to easily customize the length of the cowl. You can make it small and snug, or continue until it is long enough by knitting more repeats or until you run out of yarn. Alternatively, you can use a standard cast on which can be bound off when finished, and the two ends sewn together.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Width: 22.5 cm/9“
Circumference: 62 cm/24.5“
Measurements taken from relaxed fabric after blocking after joining and cowl laid flat).

YARN: Drops Flora (Light Fingering weight),
50 grams / 1.76 ounces – 210 meters / 230 yards, (65% Wool, 35% Alpaca),
Purchasing extra yarn is advised for knitters who plan to swatch or are worried about running out of yarn.

Note that if you use different weight yarn or different needle size, the yardage, weight and dimensions of your cowl may differ from mine.

OTHER TOOLS: Waste yarn, crochet hook for the Provisional Cast On, stitch marker, tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and a row counter is recommended blocking tools, scissors, spare needle for grafting.

NEEDLES: 3.00mm/US 2 ½ , 40 cm (16“) circular needle, or size needed to get right gauge.

Note: Needle size is suggested only, you will need to swatch to determine the needle size needed to achieve gauge.

GAUGE: 30 sts x 28 rounds = 4“ 10cm in colorwork after blocking.
You can also use yarn in different weights, but just bear in mind that the width and circumference will be different depending on your gauge.

Gauge is not crucial for this project. However, changes might result in a different yardage requirement.
You should always knit your swatch the same way that the pattern is knit. In this case - in the round. Block your swatch as you will your finished garment and allow it to dry fully before measuring.

TECHNIQUES REQUIRED: To knit this cowl you need to know how to perform a provisional cast on, stranded colorwork in the round following a chart, catching long floats, picking up stitches and grafting stitches together using kitchener stitch
