Karana Shawl
This boomerang-shaped shawl is knit from the top (neck) edge down to the hem. Due to the unique shaping, the lace motifs of this shawl appear in a gently diagonal orientation. The pattern requires between 750 and 775 yards of a light fingering weight yarn. If you choose to substitute yarns, choose one with a good drape to show off the lace motifs to their fullest. While gauge is not critical for this project, it will affect the amount of yarn you need to complete it as written if your gauge is different than that indicated.
This shawl is part of the year-long Heroines Shawl Club collection, or as a standalone pattern. The theme is the heroine of Island of the Blue Dolphins, and each of the lace motifs in the shawl represent something of importance to Karana when she was stranded on the island: Rontu, her dog, abalones, which were a main food source, and her spearhead harpoon, which she used to fish with, as well as the ocean itself.
