This pattern is an easy pattern that comprises of 2 parts, the mochi and the oak leaf.

The mochi is worked in rounds and is beginner-friendly. The oak leaf is good practice for the range of basic crochet stitches, namely chain stitch (ch), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet stitch (sc), half double crochet stitch (hdc), double crochet stitch (dc), half treble crochet stitch (htr) and treble crochet stitch (tr).

The completed amigurumi measures about 6.5cm at its longest point, 4.5cm at its widest and 2.5cm at its highest. The finished size may vary depending on hook size, yarn weight, crochet tension and how firmly the work is stuffed.

This amigurumi was inspired by the kashiwa mochi, a Japanese confection traditionally eaten on Children’s Day in Japan. It consists of a mochi filled with red bean paste and wrapped with a leaf of the Japanese daimyo oak. As the oak does not shed its old leaves until new leaves have sprouted, it is seen as a symbol of the prosperity of one’s descendants. Hence, the kashiwa mochi represents the wish for the health, well-being and prosperity of one’s offspring.
