This shawl is inspired by Katherina Minola, the protagonist of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shew. The Kate shawl evokes her contrary disposition with angular stitch patterns featured throughout. Each stitch evolves into increasingly delicate fabric just as she gradually was tamed by her new husband, Petrucio. To most of her fellow citizens of Padua, Kate goes against the grain. To symbolize her unique personality, this shawl is constructed in a modified triangular form.

By using different increase rates along each edge an asymmetrical span is created with less length than a traditional triangular shawl. A gentle curve results along the wider side making it easy to wear a multitude of ways without requiring a shawl pin or stick to hold it in place. The sawtooth edging is knit sideways and attached as knit.

All stitch patterns are presented in charted format only. Two of the four stitch patterns require working lace on both right and wrong side rows. For the fingering weight version the edging is the only two sided lace. Tips are included to knit the shawl in the more traditional symmetric triangular shape if desired. The pattern includes the original lace weight version as well as a smaller scarf-sized version knit in fingering weight yarn.
