Summer 2017 was my Summer of Shawls. I couldn’t stop thinking about, designing, and knitting shawls. This is one of my favorites: easy to knit but not boring; easy stitch pattern and the opportunity to play with color.

Kater is an asymmetrical triangle that is worked from the tip to the base with a subtle knit and purl texture, ending with graduated garter stripes at the border.

The finished measurements are a wingspan of 50” after blocking, and a center back of 27” after blocking.

One full skein of fingering weight yarn is used for the main color, and an additional 200 yards of fingering weight is used for the contrast.
The sample in the photo was worked in Ocean and Merlot.

You can certainly make the shawl larger by working more of the textured section or by adding more stripes at the bottom. You will, of course, need more yarn if you do this.

Exact gauge is not crucial. Use a needle size that gives you a fabric that you like, but be aware that a change in gauge can affect the amount of yarn used and the size of the finished shawl.
