Katherine Assumpta
Katherine Assumpta is my hero Now you would be thinking that is enough to say but never where Gran is concerned. My first memories of Gran were I thought she didn’t like me as she would not speak English to me, only Old Irish, we all could be in the lounge and she spoke English to everyone else but Irish to me. Twas not till years later that I realized she thought I was special. She would take me on walks and teach me the history of Ireland she lived. She would look at me and tell me I had the map of Ireland on my face. Gran didn’t fuss when I messed up the bread dough instead she taught me to butter my hands, when I was hurt and beaten she gave me her strength to go on. . When I would feel lost she taught me what it meant to be home. She would say “Meggie Darling, tis true you had a bad day, tis true you couldn’t save the child but do ya know how proud I am of you for weeping for the loss. You have your mothers kindness, your father’s spirit, your grandfathers tenacity and my brains. You are not perfect, but God doesn’t want you to be but as a Granddaughter I could ask for nothing else.” As a grandmother you are perfection, you marched for the right to vote, you fought for your family and your children and you taught me something that every child should hear from someone other than their parents, I had value. I can never pay you back or express how much I love you but I can say without hesitation that when I get older I would be honoured to be half the woman you are.
