This warm, cosy bonnet features a beautiful textured stitch that is sure to keep baby’s head warm. The stitch pattern reminds me of tiny capillary waves, criss-crossing across water, while the diamond shapes are reminiscent of salt flakes. I thought it only fitting to name the bonnet after Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre in South Australia, a beautiful, usually dry salt lake that occasionally fills with water (and when completely filled is the largest lake in Australia).

The main section of the bonnet is worked flat before joining in the round to complete the crown shaping. The simple pattern is worked over multiples of 4 stitches across 8 row repeats, and the bonnet is finished with crochet ties.

You will need 4mm (US6) circular needles, or a set of 4mm (US6) straight needles for working flat, and DPNs for working in the round, a needle for sewing in the ends, and a 3.5-4.5mm crochet hook for the ties.

Sizes: Premie/Small Newborn, 0-3m, 3-9m, 9-24m, 2-5y

Yarn: My preferred yarn is always Australian Superfine Merino by Cleckheaton, but any extra- or super-fine 8ply (DK) merino will do, and I would recommend using a natural product local to you (where possible).
