Katniss & Primrose is the second of a series of transformable hats dedicated to famous sisters in movies and TV shows.
This hat can be worn as a hood or a side cap simply rotating the piece by 90° and opening or closing the buttons.
The main feature of this hat is a unusual mosaic stitch, worked with a special manipulation every time the color changes that creates the illusion of colorful diamonds.
Construction
This hat is started casting on the half of the sts at the center back of the hood (or the top of the side hat) with a provisional CO. After the first 4 rows, on the first color change row, stitches are worked in pattern to end, then the piece is turned at 90° to pick up sts from the selvedges, then turned again at 90° to pick up sts from the provisional CO. The concept is similar to a garter tab CO, but bigger. In this way, the hood is not completely flat and has a bit of depth, and it looks almost perfectly seamless.
The hat is then worked back and forth on needles in mosaic pattern to the end, where sts are BO with an i-cord BO.
Finally, sts are picked up along the selvedges and worked in rib to create the band under the chin and the buttonband to close the piece as a side hat.
