Katore
A masculine beanie with two-colour texture and folding at the crown
Katore is interesting to knit, with a textured rib stitch in two colours and folding at the crown; but still achievable for beginners.
Sizing is based on a fairly snug, sporty fit. A looser more casual look can be achieved by choosing a larger size.
Yarn
Light worsted/DK/8ply. Note the yarn should be recommended for 4mm needles, with a gauge of about 22sts and 30 rows to 10cm (4 inches) for stockinette.
Shown in:
- Rowan Felted Tweed (50% wool, 25% alpaca, 25% viscose; 145m / 191 yards per 50g) in shades 175 and 159. This creates a light hat that is forgiving to imperfections in the knitting such as differences in tension.
- Isager Highland Wool (100% wool; 275m / 300 yards per 50g) held double to mimic DK, in shades ‘curry’ and ‘soil’. Doubling the yarn is fiddly but worth it for Isager’s beautiful colours.
Regular workhouse DK yarn also works well, provided it isn’t too bulky.
Needles
- Round gauge-size needle (4.5mm (US 7)) for ribbing in 40mm circumference.
- Round below-gauge-size needle (4mm (US 6)) for ribbing in 40mm circumference.
- Three gauge-size double-pointed cable needles.
Gauge
23 sts and 42 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over pattern (achieved with 4.5mm needles). Note - the gauge will not match that indicated for stockinette for the yarn.
