Cables and Chevrons travel side by side, like two romantic poets whose lives ran parallel, each enhancing the other, paths crossing like the cables that twist around the thumb detail. When I went to write the pattern, I realized that the easiest way to set it down was in two variations of a 4 round repeat which repeat at different intervals. This structure reminded me of the quatrains so loved by the romantic poets, four-line stanzas with a rhyming pattern. The English major in me couldn’t resist, so I’ve called the four round repeats “quatrains”.

You’ll need some knitting experience to knit these, at least some dexterity. The pattern is easy enough to understand but the fingers need the practice of working cables in the round on small needles. That said, they work up pretty fast and they are really fun to wear. They are stunning on, form fitting and chic, tapered to the wrist and widening again for the hand. One size is given with sizing tips. The easiest way to size them is to change needle size and maybe the yarn grist along with it. I knit these in Madelinetosh merino light in Cousteau, and it’s just a little beefy for a fingering weight yarn. They will be a little smaller in something like Tosh sock and smaller still in Malabrigo sock. Knit them on US 3/3.25mm in sport or dk weight for a larger or heavier glove. My favorite detail of these gloves is the tiny cable on the inside of the thumb. This is devilishly hard to photograph well, so trust me on this one.
