Kemmerer Fingerless Mitts
The Kemmerer mitts use a unique construction concept, come in three official sizes, and knit up fairly quickly in sportweight or 6 ply sock yarn. They’re a design relative for the Kemmerer Cowl and Kemmerer Cap, and if you choose your yarn from a source with overlapping colorways between different yarn weights, you can knit a set that’s as matched as you like!
The odd approach to their construction lends itself well to gradient or slow-color-exchange yarns, if you don’t like things to match much at all. And once you grasp the way these are built, they’re very easy to customize if you need them to fit a larger or smaller size.
Sizes:
Three sizes, to fit hands with circumferences around 7”/18cm, 7.5-8”/19-20cm, and 8-8.5”/20-21cm. As a loose guideline, small fits petite ladies or kids, medium fits about an average ladies’ size or unisex small, and large should fit a women’s large/men’s medium.
Materials:
About 80-135 yards of Patons Kroy Sock, Noro Silk Garden Sock, Malabrigo Yarn Rastita, or another substitute.
2 DPNs in US3/2.75mm, or size needed for gauge
Optional: removable stitch markers
Tapestry needle
Gauge:
Gauge is 10 sts and 20 rows over 2” of blocked garter stitch in sportweight/6ply sock yarn. Please be sure to check your gauge.
The samples are shown in Noro Silk Garden Sock, Colorway S358, and Patons Kroy Socks FX, Colorway Cameo Colors. The model is wearing the medium size.
