Kimono Pattern for Everyone
A kimono is a specific shape, made entirely of rectangles. The band that trims the garment may be either stockinette or fairisle. 2 gauges are given so the garment may be made on almost any machine. Normally a kimono is worn with a loose fit, deeper than essential armholes and, when used as an outer garment is not fastened or belted. That is why it seemed appropriate to include it in a book full of gift patterns. You can probably estimate the size somebody needs well enough. Sizes from 40-80” finished bust are included. Read the article that appears before the pattern to learn more about fit. If you know a ladies’ dress size in ready to wear, you don’t have to ask personal questions or measure her for this pattern. As a general guide, size 68, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 2018w, 20w, 22w, 24w, 26 ladies have bust measurements of 3536, 37, 38.5, 40, 41.5, 43.5, 45.5, 47.5, 49.5, 51.5, 53.5”.This statement is based on the sizing chart in a popular catalog. Remember that if the garment is to cover the hip, it needs to take into account that most women are larger below than above the waist.
The kimono style is fully explored in my Kimono Commotion book so if you enjoy this garment, you’ll find more great things to do with this shape there.
