Late last year, I was browsing yarns from a local dyer (Indigo Guinea Fibers - shop linked below!) and found a beautiful combination of worsted-weight yarns. The name given to one of the colorways struck me: “Kindness.” I had wanted to design a shawlette to celebrate the coming of spring, and I found particular beauty and similitude in kindness growing in our hearts - blooming, if you will - just as flowers begin to bloom around this time here in the northern hemisphere. I wanted the pattern to be easy but not too simple, and while knitting it, to encourage the mindful growth of love, kindness, and compassion in all of us.

The Kindness Blooms Shawlette is a beginner-level, worsted-weight, crescent-shaped shawlette worked flat from the top down. Simple stockinette stripes are offset by contrasting sections representing stages of growth: first, a seed stitch section, for planting the seeds of kindness; second, a section of twisted knit stitches representing new sprigs of growth; third, a beautiful lace garden of gathered and open stitches representing a field of flowers; and finally, a lovely picot edge of seed buds that travel from our hearts to the rest of the world, spreading new seeds of kindness to everyone we meet.

YARN
Two contrasting worsted-weight yarns: one solid/semi-solid and one variegated (MC: 70g/168 yards, CC: 66g/144 yards).
I used Indigo Guinea Fiber’s ‘Wren’ 100% superwash merino worsted-weight yarn in “Kindness 1.4” (100g/240 yards per skein) and “Black Raspberry” (100g/218 yards per skein).

NEEDLES
US size 6 (4.0mm) circular needles on a 30”/76cm cable.

NOTIONS
A tapestry needle to weave in ends.

TECHNIQUES
Knitting, purling, twisted stitches, increasing, switching colors, picot edging

GAUGE
6 sts and 4 rows = 1 inch

FINISHED DIMENSIONS
Approximately 60” (153cm) wide by 14” (36cm) tall after blocking.
