Pattern Inspiration:

This year, 2016, is the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. Smart Knits - a knitting group out of Logan, Utah - thought that a great way to celebrate the National Park Service and the sublime lands that it protects was to design a National Parks blanket. The blanket is made up of 60 blanket squares - one to celebrate each of the 59 National Parks and one square to celebrate the National Park Service itself.

Kings Canyon National Park is located in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains of California. Kings Canyon was established as a National Park in 1940 after becoming a second stomping ground for John Muir and his developing glacial-erosion hypotheses (originating from musings in Yosemite). Rae Lakes Loop is a spectacular, semi-famous, short backpacking trip within the park that the designer has hiked. Because of the great elevation gain on this hiking loop, the route has often remained completely impassable until late July due to snowpack. However, with global climate change this is not likely the case any longer. This square represents the hiking path that the Rae Lake Loop takes as it appears on a map and the many lakes along the way.
