When you need a light extra layer, when you don’t want a shawl to slide off your shoulders, when a cardigan is too much but it’s not quite warm enough to go without one, what you need is this poncho. Knitted in heavy laceweight yarn, the poncho is worked flat from one side to the other. The eyelet line pattern is easy to memorise as you increase from one point towards the neck hole, continues as the front and back are worked separately across the neck and then rejoined, and just when you’ve had enough of it, you finish the poncho by decreasing in stocking stitch alone to the point at the other end.
When worked to pattern tension of 24 sts and 40 rows over 4”/10cm of stocking stitch (after blocking), the poncho measures 58” (147cm) from side to side, and 16” (40.5cm) from neck edge to each of front and back edge. The main body of the poncho is worked in one piece, with stitches picked up afterward to work a seed stitch neck edging which complements the integral seed stitch border around the poncho.

The pattern is fully-written (no charts).

You will need:
1200 yds (1100m) heavy laceweight yarn
3.5mm (US4) knitting needles (or size needed to achieve pattern tension)
Waste yarn or spare needle for holding stitches
Stitch marker (optional)

You need to be able to: work from written directions (pattern is fully written, no charts), work common increases and decreases (YO, KFB, K2tog, SSK, centred double decrease)
