Paton’s Classic Wool bulky is a very soft merino wool, #5 weight using US standards. Another yarn may be substituted but the softness does affect the drape and flattering line of the sweater so choose carefully.
GAUGE & LOOM 2.5 stitches/3 rows/”. That is the same as 10 stitches/12 rows/10cm or 4”. The sample was knitted on the regular gauge Kiss loom with 6 washers. Many knitters get this gauge on the Kiss dragon loom also. It is also possible to knit #5 yarn on the small gauge Kiss loom with wider spacing. Jack’s Aran Vest, pictured on the next page was made on the small gauge loom set up for bulky yarn with 7 washers. The yarn used was slightly heavier than the Patons Classic Bulky yarn used for this project and even so it knitted just fine. It is important to understand that the washer count given is a starting place for your swatch. Each knitter and yarn has a unique gauge. It might require a washer more or less for you to match the gauge. Other brands of loom may be used as long as a there are enough pegs and the gauge is matched using any version of knit stitch that does not twist. The only way to figure a really accurate gauge is to knit the swatch, remove it from the loom and let it rest, then wash and dry it in the same manner as the garment will be washed. The suggested yarn is to be hand washed and laid flat to dry. This extra step is time consuming but considering the work that will go into the sweater, well worth the investment.
