Knit Covered Buttons
This pattern is
available for free.
I designed this pattern as a way to make tiny buttons covered with knitting (too small to use a commercial cover button kit), and it also works to make any size button you’d like.
Knit in the round from the center out, these buttons are easily customizable to just about any yarn and can use almost any ordinary button as the base.
The tutorial includes step-by-step instructions (with photos) for knitting the button cover, and for securing it to a plain button which forms the base. The results are neat, sturdy, washable, and of course match your project perfectly (or provide a fun contrast in another yarn).
You will need:
- scraps of yarn
- double pointed or circular needles to knit your yarn at a very dense gauge
- Washable buttons, slightly smaller than your desired finished button size, and preferably a similar color to your yarn
- A sewing needle with a sharp point and a large eye
