Knit Packer
This pattern came about as a result of several conversations between good friends and fantastic allies. After a discussion on a facebook group, in which a member shared their work to help a good friend in a difficult situation, my good friend Janet and I started talking.
I came out in 2015, and have been excited to share my discoveries and understandings of my gender as I’ve grown, and I’ve been very lucky to have friends who are not only keen to understand, but are happy to help the community whenever possible. The facebook post prompted a discussion about what packers are and how they help the trans community. Through this we discovered a need within the trans community, a need that knitting and crochet could alleviate.
Now, several of us are working to get 65 packers and 20 pairs of breast forms in time for this holiday season.
Now you’re probably wondering what this pattern is.
A Knit Packer is a gender affirming item that is worn to create the silhouette in your jeans. Typically these can be worn by trans and non-binary folks for a variety of reasons, one of which is to mitigate gender dysphoria.
Elastomer or silicone packers are expensive, difficult to source, and behind barriers such as only available online. While yes this item appears to be rather mature, the product itself is not. It’s designed with the idea in mind that someone out there could use a packer.
They take very little time to knit up, are versatile in size and stuffyness depending on your choice as you knit them. Be aware that should you decide to create something bigger, the fabric of the knit piece should remain tight to prevent stuffing from pushing out through the stitches.
Also this packer lets you decide if that’s something you’re comfortable with wearing. Better to try something free before spending money.
