A complete tutorial for 3-D knit scales!

What’s so great about these scales? They:

  • Are worked continuously with the the rest of your project- no ends to weave in!
  • Come in 5 different sizes
  • Come in 2 texture variants
  • Come in a basic and fancier version for each size/texture (except for the smallest size)
  • Can be started while working a right or wrong side row
  • Are completely independent of each other, letting you create beautiful, flowing, organic scaly apparel and accessories! Perfect for dragon scale anything!

Included in this 41-page document:

  • Scale patterns in both written and charted form
  • Detailed written instructions with pictures on how to start and end scales
  • Advice on recommended scale spacing and different arrangements, changing scale sizes, and more!

Materials

  • Yarn- I recommend a plied wool/wool blend
  • an appropriate circular needle for your yarn
  • a second circular (or straight) needle the same size or next size up
  • a crochet hook the same size as the second needle
  • a third circular (or straight) needle approximately 35-45% larger than the second needle

For example, here is a list of materials used to make the scaly dog sweater featured in the photos:

  • Fingering weight merino (Malabrigo sock)
  • US size 3 (3.25 mm) circular needle
  • US size 3 circular needle
  • US size 3 crochet hook
  • US size 7 (4.5 mm) circular needle
