Knit the Earth
This Earth Ball was created for our 2019-2020 Holiday window display at our store in Asheville, NC. The pattern is intended to fit a 22” (55cm) yoga ball.
YARN NEEDS: For the Earth Ball I created, I hand-dyed Kraemer David which is the base for one of our in-house hand-dyes. You need to use a nice sticky worsted or chunky wool, so everything will hold together solidly. I think lightly variegated or tonal yarn looks better than solid colors. You’ll need approximately
- 1000 yards of blue
- 135 yards of medium green
- 110 yards of dark green
- 110 yards of yellow/brown
- 80 yards of yellow/green
- 55 yards of white
- 55 yards of gray or gray/green
Kits of hand-dyed yarn are now being made by the designer and can be found on Purl’s online store here.
Charts are followed using intarsia technique when changing color (when it makes more sense to strand a color, you can do that, too).
All pentagon triangles decrease at the end of every row after row 2 (k2tog on odd rows, p2tog on even rows). Equilateral triangles decrease irregularly: read the charts. See pattern for further details and recommendations.
It is recommended to sew triangles together as you complete them, according to the diagrams given. Put each hemisphere together separately.
