I’ve been kicking around the idea to combine knitted and sewn elements into clothes for ages. The knitted yoke is made with inexpensive crochet thread. It is widely available (read: I bought it at Wal-mart!) comes in lots of colors, and can also be dyed-I dyed the navy with procion dye. The cotton jersey bottom can be cut out of one XL tee shirt or less than a yard of fabric.

This pattern is one size. It is worn here with 4 inches of positive ease. I imagine the pattern as written would fit a range of sizes. I’m excited to learn about pattern grading, and hope to have multiple sizes available for future projects.

The yoke is knitted at a very loose gauge, and is cool and drapey. The sewing involved is very basic-just a few stretches of running stitches-sewing machine optional.

Yoke is knit by casting on at bottom back, knitting even then dividing for sleeves and neck opening, rejoining and knitting front. Five garter stitches at the beginning and end of each row keep things from rolling. Shirt is constructed by hand sewing knitted yoke to fabric front and back, then sewing shirt side seams. Hem is unfinished.
