Knititation Shawl
For me and many others, knitting is a meditative practice. James McIntosh and Dr Thomas Ernst coined the term Knititation when this mindful practice of knitting helped James put severe depression, anxiety, and panic attacks into remission. I designed this simple shawl for that very purpose. For meditating, healing, and connecting with the body. To be able to get my “knititation” in and at the end, still have something to show for my work. I love the triangular shape, which is my favorite for many reasons. The triangle is the strongest shape in the universe and a symbol of recovery. This shawl is a reminder of strength, simplicity, and self-care. As James said, “I learned the body actually has the answers, it’s about spending time with the body. Hand knitting is the same, feeling the yarn and needles as a stitch forms, allowing thoughts to run through your mind as you are aware of them and feel the bodily sensations of stitch creation. This is knititation.”
Knititation ® is a registered trademark of James McIntosh Omnimedia Limited and used with permission.
The Shawl is knit from the bottom up in garter stitch. Increasing once per row and then about halfway through increasing two stitches per row to get the wide triangle shaping. This simple triangle shawl is a sea of garter stitch and a great way to relax. Like meditation only with knitting.
