English knitted quilts have been famous for a hundred and fifty years, and great ingenuity of pattern is shown in those which have survived. The pattern given here is called Apricot Leaf with Feather Pattern border. In pastel-coloured wool, it would make a wonderful quilt and blanket combined, but almost any yarn, provided it is not too thick, could be used. The original was made of cotton yarn on size 16 [1.625mm] needles.

The counterpane is composed of squares, each made up of four smaller squares knitted cornerways and sewn together. The size of the counterpane will depend on the number of squares.

The border is made separately and then added to the counterpane. It is knitted “shortways” and can be of any desired width. The fringe, which is worked afterwards, consists of 12-in. lengths of yarn, knotted twice.
