The Knitted Creche
An adventure in creative knitting! You’ll want to have an abundant stash of different yarns, so you may not want to begin this project immediately. Ask your knitting friends for oddments, search the sales bin, start saving the basic foundations you need. Why not begin with Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus—then add shepherds, and wise men as you knit on. This could be an adventure for a church knitting group!
Materials:
Dig through your stash, beg oddments from your friend who spin, look through your button box for gold or jewel buttons, mix materials (you won’t be putting these through the washer/dryer. Different weights of yarn will work. Ask your friends to save deodorant or perfume bottles for the bases, someone else to create the crèche and manger. In a later pattern book (“Specialties for the Eclectic Knitter) I finally came up with a pattern for a sheep—you may want to try.
Needles: Double-point needles in a number of sizes
Gauge: Varies depending yarn and needles
Skill level: Who knows? A beginner with an imagination may do as well as one with much experience.
Note: The Knitted Creche is the only pattern I spent money to have photographed professionally!
