This is a pattern for a single knitted square intended for use in knitting a sampler Afghan quilt. It is immediately available after purchase by downloading the PDF from your email inbox.

Included in this pattern are helpful video tutorials for the stitch pattern as well as for joining your knitted squares once you are finished knitting them.

Are you interested in making your own unique sampler square blanket? You may have seen many ads for other knitted sampler blankets that include several patterns for the squares. But what if you don’t particularly like one or two of those patterns?

Stop spending all that time creating something you don’t absolutely love! With single knitted squares, you can pick and choose the patterns that speak to you and your own style. You can choose easy patterns that knit up quickly or you can choose challenging knitting patterns that will stretch your skills. You can mix and match any way you like!

This Cat’s Paw stitch pattern consists of mainly knits and purls, since most of the square is stockinette. This means that the right side is only Knit stitches with a few simple increases and decreases to create strategically placed holes in the fabric. These holes will create an adorable little “paw print”, and since it is four holes, it is often called Quatrefoil. The wrong side is always only Purl stitches. Because of the simplicity of this stitch pattern, it is another great choice for the beginner knitter.

You can quickly memorize the pattern and take your knitting with you to work on as you ride in a car or sit in a waiting room. You won’t be working on a heavy blanket as it grows in size, because each square is knit individually. This Cat’s Paw stitch pattern is taught clearly in the written pattern, which includes helpful video tutorial links, as well as relevant abbreviation definitions. You’ll be able to knit right along with the video tutorials as you learn how to cast on the yarn to your needle, make each kind of stitch, and finally bind off at the end.

This is the fifth square in my knitted squares series. I will continue to create new and interesting patterns for you to choose from, so if you’d like to stay informed when I publish new patterns, you can “favorite” this shop. Etsy will automatically notify you when new knitted square patterns are available!

This knitted square is 12 inches. If you choose to use twelve squares of this size to create your knitted sampler blanket, the finished knitted blanket will be approximately 40” x 50” including a small border.

If you are new to knitting, a fun idea for a sampler blanket would be to start out with easy patterns on your knitted squares, like simple textures. Then you could choose a few intermediate patterns, like simple lacework, or maybe some bobbles. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could even choose a couple challenging squares, like reversible cables, or intricate lacework. It’s completely up to you!

You’ll love snuggling under this heirloom quality blanket with your loved ones. And they’ll know that each stitch was chosen and created by you with love!

Project Details:

Size: 12” x 12”

100 yds (#4) medium weight yarn (I used “I Love This Cotton” in Color Aqua)

Knitting Needles Size US 10 (6 mm) - I used circular needles, but straight needles would work fine as well.

Yarn Needle for sewing in ends

Gauge: 16 stitches x 22 rows = 4” in Stockinette Stitch

Pattern notes:
This is the fifth square in the Knitted Patchwork Quilt Series. It is important to have the correct gauge so that each of your squares are pretty close to the same size. You can correct for slight variances in size when you block each piece after knitting.
Because of the simple stitch pattern, a quatrefoil stitch (also called Cat’s Paw), this square is perfect for the beginner knitter. It uses only knits and purls for most of the square with a few simple yarn over increases and easy decreases placed here and there in a specific order to create the interesting lace pattern.
