Knitted Tree Baubles
I’m super excited to invite you to the sixth annual Bauble Along! We will be celebrating our love of baubles from November 12 through January 6th. Sign up here!
These hanging baubles are very quick to make from scrap yarn. With just nine rows of an easily memorized design, they are a great introduction to stranded knitting.
These trinkets start with a provisional cast on of just 8 stitches. You’ll increase to the maximum circumference, knit the stranded portion and then work the decrease section. The ornaments are stuffed right before the final round and are finished off with a tidy crochet hanging loop.
The patterned portion of the baubles is worked using the stranded method of knitting. Hold both colors throughout the charted rounds, changing colors as indicated.
Finished Measurements:
DK yarn: Approximately 2.5” tall by 8” circumference
Gauge: 6 stitches per inch for DK weight yarn.
Gauge is not critical but should be tight enough to prevent stuffing from peeking through. Using white yarn as the main color helps to blend with the color of the stuffing.
Techniques Used:
Provisional cast on (cast on with yarn and knit)
Reading from a chart
Knitting in the round with magic loop
Increasing and decreasing stitches
Stranded knitting
Crochet chain for hanging loop
Stuffing the ornament with polyester filling
Materials Needed:
Yarn:
Scraps of any DK or worsted weight yarn. Samples knitted using Wollmeise Merino DK for the main color and Malabrigo Silky Merino (aqua) and Madeline Tosh Merino DK (gold) for contrast colors
Needles:
US Size 5 (3.75 mm) 40” circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge. These are knit at a tight gauge to prevent the stuffing from peeking out.
Notions:
3 Stitch markers, one locking
Crochet hook in similar size as needle
Tapestry needle
Polyfill or other stuffing material
